Andrew Jackson's Hermitage Kitchen Gardens

The Hermitage - Kitchen GardenOur Master Gardener project at The Hermitage represents a kitchen garden from 1835 to 1845. We know that President Andrew Jackson and his wife Rachel fed their family and approximately 140 slaves from the gardens and land surrounding his Tennessee home. We will replicate many of the heirloom vegetables grown using historic methods on a small scale.

There are two vegetable gardens, each measuring 20' x 40'. Many of our seeds have come from Monticello -- the home of President Thomas Jefferson in Charlottesville, Virginia. All seeds are heirloom seeds and were of plants grown during this era.
